45% Reduced Risk

High use of the supplements was found to reduce colorectal cancer risk by 45% compared to non-use, however this was below the researchers’ threshold to be statistically significant.

But they concluded: “Since colorectal cancer is major cause of morbidity and mortality, it is important that we seek potential preventive strategies which are safe, effective, and easily implemented. (more…)

A little sitting, a lot of risk

Maybe chairs need warning labels like cigarettes — because the risks of too much sitting are every bit as bad as smoking.

And in some ways, they’re even worse.

Sitting can slow the body’s metabolism to a crawl, which is why it’s been linked to weight gain, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and even death — and a new study makes the connection again, especially in men.

The more you sit, the higher your risk — and all it takes for your own chronic disease risk to climb is four hours a day in a chair.

That’s just half a normal workday. (more…)

Pineapple’s Amazing Healing Properties Revealed

Enjoyed the world over as something of an icon of the tropical experience, the pineapple was used in indigenous medicine for a wide range of ailments; uses that are only now being confirmed by modern scientific methods.

While most know pineapple as an exceptionally delicious tropical fruit, indigenous peoples used it to treat a variety of ailments. Unfortunately, much of this intimate plant knowledge was considered by early anthropologists to be based on mere “superstition” and subsequently disregarded, so few in the modern world have been made aware of its formidable healing powers. Reduce your cancer risk – especially colorectal – by eating more ginger

Ginger is one of Ayurveda’s favorite medicinal and tonic herbs, and it has emerged also as a culinary favorite lately. There has been considerable clinical testing by modern Western medicine that shows ginger’s anti-inflammatory effects.

Now, there’s been a small trial that points to ginger’s capacity for inhibiting and preventing cancer. The trial was performed on 20 subjects who were considered high risk for colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer is cancer of the colon or rectum. It is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer, and it is the second most lethal. The cancer industry asserts that early detection leads to possibly thwarting the death sentence. (more…)

Cancer breakthrough: Grape seed extract kills colorectal cancer cells

Cancer researchers are working to find chemotherapies that destroy cancer cells but are harmless to normal cells. It turns out, a natural substance already exists that does just that. University of Colorado Cancer Center scientists have just published a study in the journal Cancer Letters that shows grape seed extract (GSE) is a powerful weapon against colorectal cancer. It halts the growth and survival of colorectal cancer cells and kills them in large numbers, too, while leaving healthy cells completely alone.

And the news about GSE gets better: the more advanced the colorectal cancer cells, the more GSE shuts down the malignant cells’ growth and survival. The scientists think that GSE targets colorectal cancer by causing oxidative stress that leads to the programmed cell death known as apoptosis. (more…)

Mistletoe: A Kiss-Off to Cancer?

Mistletoe the cheery kiss-inducing Christmas plant contains a natural compound that has been found to have potent anti-cancer properties.

Scientists at the University of Adelaide in Australia have determined the extract of mistletoe could either assist chemotherapy or act as an alternative to drugs as a treatment for colon cancer, the second leading cause of cancer death in the Western world.

Mistletoe extract is now used as an alternative colon cancer therapy in some parts of Europe, but lack of scientific testing has kept it off the market in Australia and the United States. That new research, led by Zahra Lotfollahi, could change that. (more…)

Eating Purple Cabbage Is Great For Your Skin And Prevents Cancer

Besides lending itself as a food of art, adding wonderful color in salads and main dishes, purple cabbage with its antioxidant properties also works wonders for the skin and prevents cancer.

Along with other cole crops, cabbage is a source of indole-3-carbinol, a chemical that boosts DNA repair in cells and appears to block the growth of cancer cells. A team of researchers at Ohio State University announced that anthocyanins, the compounds that give cabbage its purple color are capable of cutting the growth of colon cancer cells both in vitro and in rats by 50%-100%, with certain extracts even destroying up to 20% of the cancer cells while leaving healthy surrounding cells intact.
