Here’s something I never thought we’d hear in this lifetime:
We suspect that the benefits to heart health of sunlight will outweigh the risk of skin cancer.
A lot of us are secretly, boldly basking for reasons like vitamin D, mood enhancement, happiness, skin issues, liver health, pain and more. Now there’s never a reason to fear harm or feel guilty – you could save your heart – and prevent an untimely death!
The espoused fear for about 50 years has been skin cancer rates (which continue to rise), but researchers are finally surmising that years of hiding from the sun could lead to increased heart attacks – a much sooner demise than the risk of skin cancer in later years. Sunlight does so much more than vitamin D production.

Our biological connection and dependence to the sun is so profound, that the very variation in human skin color from African, melanin-saturated dark skin, to the relatively melanin de-pigmented, Caucasian lighter-skin, is a byproduct of the offspring of our last common ancestor from Africa (as determined by mitochondrial DNA) migrating towards sunlight-impoverished higher latitudes, which began approximately 60,000 years ago. In order to compensate for the lower availability of sunlight, the body rapidly adjusted, essentially requiring the removal of the natural “sunscreen” melanin from the skin, which interferes with vitamin D production; vitamin D, of course, is involved in the regulation of over 2,000 genes, and therefore is more like a hormone, without which our entire genetic infrastructure becomes destabilized. Sunlight: Without it there would be almost no life. It’s key factor involved in photosynthesis, a process vital for many living beings on Earth. Considering the lengths we go to protect ourselves from the sun, it’s a wonder that the incidence of disease is not higher than it already is. Before the advent of toxic drugs and antibiotics, sunlight was being used to treat everything from tuberculosis, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, acne, cancer, sleep disorders and overcoming worldwide sanitation problems including the purification of water. It should be obvious that we need to avoid toxins — the word alone is a warning.
But instead of helping us to keep free of these dangerous chemicals, mainstream medical groups are actually encouraging us to rub them all over our bodies. Just take a look at the latest advice from the American Academy of Dermatology.
The group, which claims to represent 17,000 dermatologists, didn’t just endorse one or two ingredients with known risks. They actually went ahead and urged people to use no less than three hazardous chemicals — ingredients so bad that even some sunscreen manufacturers are doing away with them voluntarily. (more…)
Medical advise says to avoid sun, fats and red meat, but to drink lots of water, eat polyunsaturated vegetable oils and focus on the grain-rich bottom of the food pyramid. The medical advice is simply wrong and is not supported by the biomedical literature. A recent article in a major medical journal claims that about 90% of medical advice is not based on clinical research studies, but rather represents the opinions of experts who are supported by the health industry. Most research is conducted to support products. Unfortunately the advice that comes from medical societies is not healthy.
Here I will provide a few examples to illustrate that medical advice is frequently, if not usually, wrong about diet, nutrition, cause of disease, appropriate drug use and whether to spend a few unprotected moments basking in sunshine.
