One key issue overlooked in the autism discussion is the role infection plays in the disorder. Understanding some fundamental concepts will enable us to begin the discussion on prevention.
The more attention we place on correcting the Standard American Diet and healing systemic infection, the greater chance we have at reducing the rate of autism, which is currently climbing the ranks as one of our most important public health concerns. (1)
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) just released numbers from a recent study – and what it implies is staggering: we are facing an epidemic of children with autism.
According to the CDC, one in 88 children is now diagnosed with the disorder.
Is High Fructose Corn Syrup Linked to Autism?
We now know that autism spectrum disorder goes beyond genetic risk factors, or information that we inherit from our parents’ DNA.
In fact, a 2011 Stanford University School of Medicine study found that 62 percent of autism risk is attributed to environmental factors. (3)
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) suggests that one example of an environmental factor is mercury, which is a neurotoxic chemical. While we know that mercury is a waste chemical and that it is even used in the dental industry, many of us are unaware that mercury is also often found in high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). (4)
Another recent study has made the connection between HFCS and autism. (2) High fructose corn syrup is prevalent in the American diet. Whether a food is sweet or savory, a majority of packaged foods contain some version of HFCS. (5) Examples of packaged foods are:
Autism has become a nationwide epidemic. And researchers point to neurotoxic chemicals found in our food supply in the form of high fructose corn syrup, most often used in canned foods, baked goods, carbonated drinks, and even fruit juice.
- Carbonated drinks
- Fruit juice
- Sauces and condiments
- Canned foods
- Deli meats
- Baked goods
In this study, researchers point out that consumption of HFCS has been linked to severe mineral deficiencies, which can lead to both:
- Heavy metal toxicity
- Nutrient deficiency
This is accurate. And by bringing attention to common food toxins, science is taking a step in the right direction. However, this is only part of the picture.
While toxic compounds in our environment and in our food may certainly contribute to the development of autism, we are failing to see how all these elements relate to one another.
For example, another study that was released this past month tells us that children born to diabetic, hypertensive, or obese mothers have a higher risk of developing autism. (6) One food that contributes to diabetes, hypertension, and obesity is HFCS.
Chronic Infection: Putting Together the Puzzle
Through our work with over 800 families of autistic children, we have recognized a common denominator – every child we have worked with has had a fungal infection. Research needs to start focusing on this common denominator.
The poorer our diets become, the more common it is for us to carry multiple infections -including fungal and yeast infections. High-sugar diets not only feed infectious bacteria and yeast, but they also weaken immune system response.
During pregnancy, a mother’s immune system swings into what is known as a TH2-dominant state.
A TH2-dominant state means that the mother’s immune system is less reactive against viruses, fungi, parasites, and bacteria. This immune system swing protects the baby. Otherwise, the immune system would prompt the rejection of the fetus and placenta.
Chronic infections passed to the baby not only weaken a baby’s immune system but inhibit the body’s natural process of eliminating toxins and heavy metals. This is a central reason why so many autistic children do not have a healthy inner ecosystem and thus are constipated and unable to eliminate waste properly or have severe diarrhea, causing malabsorption.
The Body Ecology theory is that when these babies with weakened immune systems are vaccinated, the vaccine actually infects the body, instead of inoculating it, with a systemic infection. This infection acts as a carrier to transport the vaccine strain and the toxins in the vaccine (like mercury) into the brain.
Recovery and Prevention Is Possible
While science must slowly piece together information based on research, many parents of autistic children feel paralyzed by the conventional medical system and lack of answers.
Parents working with BEDROK (Body Ecology Recovering Our Kids) know that these following factors play a pivotal role in the control of autism:
- Immune system regulation
The BEDROK program works with 4 principles as its foundation:
- Heal the gut and restore inner ecology.
- Correct nutritional deficiencies.
- Create energy so that the body can heal.
- Conquer systemic infection
For Mothers and Expectant Mothers
We encourage the Body Ecology Diet, which is low in sugar and high in beneficial microflora.
We discourage the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, which kill both disease-causing and beneficial bacteria.
If both mother and child follow the principles of the Body Ecology Diet, it may be possible to see the numbers of children affected by autism drop.
It is time to reclaim our health, beginning with the food that we eat. Let’s clean up our mistake and move forward with beautiful, healthy babies.
What to Remember Most About This Article:
Autism is a popular topic of concern in the health community today, but many people overlook the role that infection plays in the disorder. Researchers have concluded that 62 percent of the risk of autism is caused by environmental factors, including chemicals in the environment and our food supply.
Even high fructose corn syrup, found in a vast majority of packaged foods, contains the neurotoxic chemical mercury – posing a danger to children at risk for autism. Additionally, high fructose corn syrup can contribute to fungal infections in the body during pregnancy and after a baby is born. This is precisely why so many autistic children have an imbalanced inner ecosystem and struggle with severe digestive issues.
To fight against autism and protect your children, you can use 4 important BEDROK principles today:
- Heal the gut to restore health to the inner ecosystem.
- Correct nutritional deficiencies.
- Create energy to help the body heal itself naturally.
- Conquer systemic infection.
