Fight Arthritis Pain and Inflammation with These 7 Foods

Foods Arthritis

Broccoli is one of the many foods that can help relieve arthritis pain and inflammation.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that nearly one in two people may develop knee osteoarthritis by the age of 85 years. Two out of three will develop it sometime during their lifetimes.

These are sobering statistics, and help remind us of how many of us may eventually suffer from joint pain and degradation. Though we have a number of pain-relieving drugs, these are poor long-term solutions. Over a period of several years, some patients “get used” to them and no longer enjoy as much pain relief. Some pills can also increase risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.

Fortunately, a number of foods contain natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help alleviate the pain of arthritis. Here are seven with promising research behind them.

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation of the joints. Areas like the jaw, elbows, knees and hips are most vulnerable. In the early stages, you may complain of pain from time to time. But being physically active gradually becomes more challenging as arthritis progresses – and as the condition worsens some find themselves home bound. In America, Arthritis is the number 1 cause of disability. [1] (more…)

Eating Sesame Seeds Superior To Tylenol for Knee Arthritis

Eating Sesame Seeds Superior To Tylenol for Knee Arthritis

A remarkable new study published in the International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases confirms that food is not only medicine, but sometimes superior to it Medical researchers working out of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Tabriz, Iran, sought to investigate the effects of sesame seed supplementation on clinical signs and symptoms in patients with knee osteoarthritis.[i]

Knee osteoarthritis is a form of degenerative joint disease or degenerative arthritis localized in the knee, and causes a variety of symptoms including pain, swelling, abnormal bone growth (which can result in bone spurs), disfigured cartilage and loss of motion, and it affects as many as 12.1% of adults aged 60+, according to the CDC.[ii]  Standard therapy involves the use of NSAID drugs, many of which have been linked both to internal bleeding and significantly increased risk of cardiac mortality, which is why the researchers sought out to look for “a complementary treatment to reduce complications and costs.” (more…)

What Big Pharma doesn’t want you to know about bromelain

Bromelain is an inexpensive enzyme supplement with many uses and health benefits. Enzymes don’t get much respect, yet they are considered more important functionally than vitamins and minerals. Without enzymes, food cannot be broken down into its constituent nutrients, and enzymes are needed for most cellular metabolic actions.

What is MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)?

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is an organic sulfur-containing compound that occurs naturally in fruits, vegetables, grains, animals, and even humans. MSM has earned a lot of attention for its use as a nutritional supplement. This is due to MSM’s reputation as a potent antioxidant booster that is believed to resist inflammation and oxidative damage, especially after exercise and strenuous activities. [1]

Vitamin B-3: Niacin and Its Amide

The first water soluble vitamins were numbered in sequence according to priority of discovery. But after their chemical structure was determined they were given scientific names. The third one to be discovered was the anti-pellagra vitamin before it was shown to be niacin. But the use of the number B-3 did not stay in the literature very long. It was replaced by nicotinic acid and its amide (also known medically as niacin and its amide). The name was changed to remove the similarity to nicotine, a poison.

The term vitamin B-3 was reintroduced by my friend Bill W., co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, (Bill Wilson). We met in New York in 1960. Humphry Osmond and I introduced him to the concept of mega vitamin therapy. We described the results we had seen with our schizophrenic patients, some of whom were also alcoholic. We also told him about its many other properties. It was therapeutic for arthritis, for some cases of senility and it lowered cholesterol levels.  (more…)

Asthma and Arthritis Medications Are Drug Muggers

It’s disturbing to me that consumers will ponder a menu for much longer than they will the side effects associated with their medications. And even those who do look up their medicine or ask their pharmacist still don’t know that drugs can mug the body of nutrients, the very nutrients you need to stay healthy, to see clearly, have energy, keep you free of pain and maintain a happy mood.

Surprised? Most people are, and I can say that safely because I’ve been a pharmacist for 23 years, and I always get the same look when I tell people they need to “marry” their medicine with the right nutrient(s) to minimize or avoid (or reverse) side effects.

Don’t believe me? Let’s delve a little deeper into this. (more…)
