1) Chili Peppers
Scientists have reported that chili peppers are a heart-healthy food with potential to protect against the No. 1 cause of death in the developed world. Chili peppers are a natural remedy for a sore throat that can often precede a cold or flu. Yes, that feeling of having crushed glass floating around in your throat can often be remedied without conventional over-the-counter analgesics. A mixture of hot red chili powder – often called Cayenne pepper – and orange juice is a very effective remedy for sore throats and congestion in general.
“The unique property of honey lies in its ability to fight infection on multiple levels, making it more difficult for bacteria to develop resistance,” said study leader Susan M. Meschwitz, Ph.D. That is, it uses a combination of weapons, including hydrogen peroxide, acidity, osmotic effect, high sugar concentration and polyphenols — all of which actively kill bacterial cells, she explained. The osmotic effect, which is the result of the high sugar concentration in honey, draws water from the bacterial cells, dehydrating and killing them. Honey is one of the most incredible non-perishable foods that can kill almost every type of bacteria.
Two thousand years ago, the Greeks and Romans used silver containers to hold and protect perishable liquids against harmful organisms. Silver containers were used until the invention of refrigeration to protect food liquids — such as milk — from spoiling. Using silver in the medical setting came into practice about one hundred and fifty years ago as a means to protect against infection. It remained popular against harmful organisms until the advent of antibiotics.

Dietary shortages of crucial minerals like zinc may be keeping almost a third of the world’s people from optimizing their immune system. Research shows that adequate zinc intake reduces the severity and duration of illness caused by the common cold.
Experts say as many as two billion people around the world have diets deficient in zinc – and studies at Oregon State University and elsewhere are raising concerns about the health implications this holds for infectious disease, immune function, DNA damage and cancer. (more…)
Cranberries are an amazing berry and should be considered a super food. Research presented in just the last year alone on what this little fruit offers is astonishing. The benefits that cranberries offer are far more than previously understood. No longer should cranberries be only relegated to urinary tract infection (UTI) support, a garnish dish at the Thanksgiving dinner table or the high sugar cocktail juice that your grandmother drinks. Amazing health benefits are wrapped up in this little berry.

1. Vitamin D
Boosting up on Vitamin D helps to prevent colds and flu. This may be related to the necessary role this vitamin plays in the protection and lubrication of many of the body’s principle organ systems. It also boosts cellular growth and normal immune cell activity. I recommend 15 minutes daily of natural sunlight, consuming more foods with vitamin d and possibly taking a vitamin D3 supplement. The risk of children suffering from flu can be reduced by 50% if they take vitamin D, doctors in Japan have found. The finding has implications for flu epidemics since vitamin D, which is naturally produced by the human body when exposed to direct sunlight, has no significant side effects, costs little and can be several times more effective than anti-viral drugs or vaccines according to research in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Only one in ten children, aged six to 15 years, taking the sunshine vitamin in a clinical trial came down with flu compared with one in five given a dummy tablet. Mitsuyoshi Urashima, the Japanese doctor who led the trial, told The Times that vitamin D was more effective than vaccines in preventing flu. (more…)
Daily supplements of the probiotic Bifidobacterium lactis subsp lactis may reduce the risk of the common cold (upper respiratory tract infections or URTIs), reducing fevers by 72 percent and coughs by 62 percent.
In a earlier study done in China, small children who drank a mixture of probiotics twice a day during the winter and spring had fewer colds, needed fewer antibiotics, and missed fewer days of school than other children who drank plain milk instead. In that study published in the journal Pediatrics, the researchers report that compared to the placebo group, the Lactobacillus group had 53 percent fewer fevers, 41 percent fewer cough episodes, and 28 percent fewer runny noses.
