EPA Fatty Acids May Prevent Secondary Stroke


The omega-3 essential fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) may reduce the recurrence of certain types of stroke, according to newly released research from Japan.

The two main types of strokes are ischemic and hemorrhagic. Ischemic strokes are caused by a blood clot blocking a blood vessel that feeds the brain. Without a steady supply of blood, that area of the brain malfunctions or dies. With hemorrhagic strokes, a burst blood vessel causes the damage.


Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Fish Intake and Environmental Contaminants Studied in Cardiovascular Health

A study published in Environmental Research indicates that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) intake reduces cardiovascular disease risk factors. Additionally, arterial stiffness was related to environmental contaminants found in fish. However, the environmental contaminants did not outweigh the benefits of fish intake on carotid artery plaque formation. Currently, an estimated 80 million Americans have cardiovascular disease. Omega-3s Lower Heart Failure Risk by 15 Percent

Increased intakes of omega-3s and higher blood levels of the fatty acids are associated with a 15% decrease in the risk of heart failure, says a new meta-analysis.

Seven prospective studies, which provided data on 176,441 subjects and 5,480 incident cases of heart failure, indicated that people with the highest category of EPA and DHA levels had a 14% lower risk of heart failure, compared to people with the lowest levels. (more…)

Industry group cutting wildlife experts out of inner circle deciding
pesticide policy

Seattle, WA– Conservation and pesticide-watchdog groups today filed a
lawsuit to stop the Environmental Protection Agency from giving illegal
special access to a group of chemical corporations. Documents obtained
under the Freedom of Information Act and other sources reveal that the
corporate insider group has met regularly with EPA officials in secret and
has urged EPA to weaken endangered species protections from pesticides. The

Fish Oil May Hold Key To Leukemia Cure

A compound produced from fish oil that appears to target leukemia stem cells could lead to a cure for the disease, according to Penn State researchers. The compound — delta-12-protaglandin J3, or D12-PGJ3 — targeted and killed the stem cells of chronic myelogenous leukemia, or CML, in mice, said Sandeep Prabhu, associate professor of immunology and molecular toxicology in the Department of Veterinary and Medical Sciences. The compound is produced from EPA — Eicosapentaenoic Acid — an Omega-3 fatty acid found in fish and in fish oil, he said. (more…)
