Ginger: The Herb For Everything?

Whatever Happened to my #1 Herb for Pretty Much Everything?

Weight loss? Check.  Antibacterial? Check.  Liver Protection? Check.  Is there anything ginger can’t do?

As we approach spring, marketing madness will of course strip us of our sensibility and convince us that now is the time for change.  A new year; a new you.  Weight loss fads and a detox in the box is just what the doctor ordered, isn’t it?  “Come one, come all; choose your potion, swallow your pill, take your natural products to prevent you from getting ill.”  Plus, as the bitter face chilling cold of the Great White North begins to etch at our bones, our deepening desire to stay warm, active, and support our immune system (and sanity) becomes ever apparent.   We turn to our natural health care providers (Television and Google) in hopes of gaining calm within a storm of confusion.  Is it the carrot diet, bread and water diet, the one meat only diet, or the no diet?  Maybe it’s the “see food” or “no food” diet. I just want to know what ever happened to my number one, simple, inexpensive, unbelievably reliable and scientifically validated herb that I, along with rest of the world pretty much used to use for everything.

Ginger and ALA Protect Liver

Ginger and alpha lipoic acid (ALA) can help to prevent age-related changes to the liver, according to a recent study.

Antioxidants fight free radicals—highly unstable forms of oxygen that can lead to a variety of age-related diseases. Free radicals can also damage and age the organs, including the liver. In this study, researchers examined the effects of two antioxidant supplements—ginger and ALA—on liver alterations.

The researchers studied the livers of young (4 months) and older (24 months) rats. The livers of the older rats showed signs of both age and failure. However, these age-related changes improved significantly with both ginger and ALA supplementation, although ALA was more effective than ginger.

The researchers wrote, “Ginger and ALA appear to be promising anti-aging agents based on their amelioration of ultrastructural alterations in livers of old rats.”

9 Herbs and Spices With Proven Health Benefits

Even when our food choices aren’t the best, herbs and spices do more than just improve taste.  They give any meal a nutrition boost.  And according to a new study they may even reverse the damage from an unhealthy meal.

Researchers from Penn State University cooked up coconut chicken, cheese bread and a dessert biscuit for six men. The subjects were aged 30 to 65 and overweight but otherwise healthy.  On one day the meal was served plain.  On another day researchers added two tablespoons of a blend of nine herbs and spices to the meal.

After each meal the researchers drew blood from the subjects every 30 minutes for four hours.  They found that antioxidant activity in the blood increased 13% after the spicy meal compared to the plain meal.

The spices and herbs also decreased post-meal insulin levels by 21% and triglyceride levels in the blood by as much as 31%.  That in turn could reduce heart disease risk.

Ginger Shows Promise As An Anti-Alzheimer’s Agent

Researchers Find Ginger May Be The Perfect 'Drug Alternative' for Alzheimer's

Cutting edge science now points to this common spice as a possible ‘curative agent’ for Alzheimer’s. Considering the well-known harms and lack of effectiveness associated with pharmaceutical agents for this condition, this research promises a new therapeutic path for this so-called ‘incurable’ disease.

A new study published in the Indian Journal of Experimental Biology suggests that ginger may be an excellent natural anti-Alzheimer’s (AD) treatment.

Indian researchers at the Department of Neurochemistry, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, report that ginger may provide “multiple therapeutic molecular targets of AD and can be considered as an effective nontoxic nutraceutical supplement for AD.”

Ginger Root Kills Ovarian & Prostate Cancer Cells Better than Chemo

Thanks to research from the University of Michigan and nearly three centuries of medicinal use, we can now utilize ginger root to not only kill ovarian cancer cells, but also prostate cancer cells with zero toxicity.

Truly among the great medicines of the world, ginger has long been used to treat inflammation and nausea, but the results presented in a session at the American Association for Cancer Research show that in every single instance where ginger powder was used to treat cancer cells, they all died as a result of being exposed to the compound. In medical lingo this is called apoptosis (cancer cell suicide.) When ginger is present, the cells even attack one another, called autophagy. (more…)

Ginger Benefits People with Asthma

gingerme Ginger Benefits People with Asthma

by Dr. Mercola

Ginger has been used medicinally for centuries and in the U.S. is perhaps most known for its ability to soothe nausea and stomach upset.

It is without a doubt the best remedy I know of for nausea. You don’t need much just a piece the size of your fingernail minced very finely and swallowed.  It is phenomenally effective.

But now new research suggests this natural root may provide help for much more, including for arthritis pain, heart health, and people with asthma, in whom ginger may enhance the effects of the bronchodilating medications conventionally used to treat their condition. It may even be useful for weight control!
