Herbal Antiseptic Oils Beats Disinfectant for Inhibiting Superbug Infections

Herbal Antiseptic Oils Beats Chemical for Inhibiting Superbug Infections

As the battle against superbugs like MRSA and other hospital-acquired infections rages on, researchers have determined that oils derived from plants outperform the antiseptic chlorhexidine and even ethanol in the inhibition of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

The researchers – from Australia’s Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital – tested a number of extracts derived from plants, including Tea Tree oil, Lemongrass oil, and Eucalyptus oil – against several of the most deadly antibiotic-resistant superbugs. These included Klebsiella pneumoniae, MRSA – methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus,  VRE – vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus, multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and ESBL-producing Escherichia coli. The testing was carried out in a laboratory. (more…)

Colloidal Silver is Miraculous Against Viruses, Bacteria and Fungi

Silver has been a friend to mankind for hundreds of years.  Silver has been used as coinage since the time of the ancient Greeks, and prized for its ability to retain value.  Silver does not corrode, making it ideal to be  been utilized in a variety of industrial applications, including imaging and photography, electronics, water purification, chemical processing, and various catalytic uses. But undoubtedly, silver’s greatest gift to mankind is its amazing health benefits that can be found in no other substance. (more…)

Death by Fungi

In Nature this month there is an essay about natural catastrophes that might overtake us. One of these focuses on the threat posed by local fungus populations:

Although viruses and bacteria grab more attention, fungi are the planet’s biggest killers. Of all the pathogens being tracked, fungi have caused more than 70% of the recorded global and regional extinctions, and now threaten amphibians, bats and bees. The Irish potato famine in the 1840s showed just how devastating such pathogens can be. Phytophthora infestans (an organism similar to and often grouped with fungi) wiped out as much as three-quarters of the potato crop in Ireland and led to the death of one million people. (more…)

The last antibiotic: Drug companies run out of weapons against the very same superbugs they helped create

The age of antibiotics is over. It’s history. There are no more patented chemical antibiotics in the pipeline. The drug companies have all but abandoned antibiotics research, leaving humanity to suffer the fate of a wave of drug-resistant bacteria — superbugs — that the drug companies actually helped create.

The industry is down to one last-ditch chemical: colistin, a toxic bug-killing chemical discovered in 1949. It kills superbugs, but it also causes kidney damage. So if you’re infected with a superbug in a hospital, you can choose to either die from an infection, or die from the cure.

…There’s a lot of that going on in medicine these days, it seems…

Nearly all antibiotics are now obsolete (more…)

36 Natural Alternatives for Infection

36 Natural Alternatives for Infection

Most people have issues with bacterial or viral infections from time to time. Unnecessary antibiotics ARE dangerous! Antibiotics damage the integrity of the microbial balance in the gut. The healthy gut microflora is 70-80% of the immune system. Impaired immune systems are less effective at healing the body.

Plant products have historically been consumed and utilized for their anti-microbial and health boosting benefits. Many plant materials are being researched for their therapeutic value for our immune health.

Here are 36 natural substances which have been studied to help to support our body’s immune system to heal itself! (more…)

Prostate biopsies double your infection risk

Imagine fighting for your life after a cancer scare… only to find out you didn’t even have cancer in the first place.

Well, imagine no more: If you’re a man getting a prostate biopsy, you’re putting your life on the line — because a new study finds the biopsy itself can double your risk of a life-threatening infection in the month after the procedure.

Researchers compared data on 17,472 older men who had prostate biopsies to that of 134,977 who did not, and found that 6.9 percent of the men who underwent the procedure were hospitalized in the 30 days afterward — versus just 2.9 percent of the un-biopsied. (more…)
