Olive oil contains oleuropein, a potent antioxidant compound, for which previous researchers have identified the capacity to inhibit cell proliferation of breast and urinary cancers, as well, as to decrease breast cancer cell viability. ZK Hassan, from King Saud University (Saudi Arabia), and colleagues investigated the effect of oleuropein on the metastatic and anti-metastatic gene expression in the MDA human breast cancer cell line. The team observed that oleuropein initially down-regulated matrix Metalloproteinase (MMP) genes – thought to be overexpressed in tumor cells; and oleuropein promoted the tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPS) – with which cell-death inducing properties are associated. The study authors submit that: “oleuropein plays an important role in regulating MDA cell metastasis by suppressing the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 genes and upregulating the expression of TIMP1 and TIMP4 genes in breast cancer cells therefore it can help in tailoring new anti-metastatic cancer therapy.”

Followers of the popular Mediterranean diet have known for years that eating fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds and plenty of extra virgin olive oil is beneficial to health. Recent studies have continued to bolster this eating pattern, with much less emphasis on overcooked meats, hydrogenated fats and fried foods. Researchers from Purdue University have published the result of a study in the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research that demonstrates how the type and quantity of salad dressing determines the bioavailability of fat soluble carotenoids (including lutein, lycopene, beta-carotene and zeaxanthin) in vegetables and fruits. Depending on the type of oil you use to cook — and whether or not you reheat that oil for multiple uses — you could be exposing yourself to high levels of toxic aldehydes, chemicals known to cause neurodegenerative disease and cancer. Researchers from the University of the Basque Country (UBC) in Spain have found that some popular cooking oils, including soybean and sunflower oils, generate high levels of toxic aldehydes when heated and reheated.
