Resveratrol is a “polyphenol” found in the skin of dark grapes that is produced naturally when the plant is under attack by pathogens such as bacteria or fungi.

What is a “polyphenol”? If you look at the attached photo, the two hexagons in the structure of the molecules are called “aromatic rings” and the OH groups are called “hydroxyl” groups. When aromatic rings and hydroxyl groups are together, the chemical is called a “phenol.” Since there is more than one of these phenols present, resveratrol is a “polyphenol.”

Polyphenols are often associated with compounds that are antioxidants. This is because they can react with free radicals to form a more stable molecule; one that is less toxic than the original radical. Since resveratrol’s prime function in nature is to protect the fruit against pathogens, it only makes sense that it would exhibit potent anti-fungal activity in the human body, which it does. It also destroys candida albicans.

Through the body’s infinite wisdom, its systems recognize foreign invaders and poisons such as chemotherapy which are not beneficial for the brain. Many cancer drugs are consequently blocked from passing the blood-brain barrier. However, TRAIL is permitted passage due to its beneficial effects on the immune system.

Another positive is that TIC10 does not just activate the TRAIL gene in cancerous cells, but also in healthy ones. This is known as the ‘bystander effect’ – i.e. where cells near cancerous cells are also killed.

We have lost the war against cancer.  This becomes obvious by taking a quick look at the chart below.  Cancer Death Rates have declined slightly since 1975 due to reduction in lung cancer rates from decreased cigarette consumption.  Otherwise, there has been little change.

Red Wine Chemical, Resveratrol, Remains Effective Against Cancer After the Body Converts It

Oct. 2, 2013 — A chemical found in red wine remains effective at fighting cancer even after the body’s metabolism has converted it into other compounds

This is an important finding in a new paper published in the journal Science Translational Medicine by Cancer Research UK-funded researchers at the University of Leicester’s Department of Cancer Studies and Molecular Medicine.

The paper reveals that resveratrol — a compound extracted from the skins of red grapes — is not rendered ineffective once it is metabolised by the body.

This is an important development, as resveratrol is metabolised very quickly — and it had previously been thought that levels of the extracted chemical drop too quickly to make it usable in clinical trials.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disabling disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that affects approximately 400,000 people in the US. MS is characterized by relapsing and remitting neurological dysfunction associated with acute episodes of inflammation. Last month featured Part 1 of this two-part update on multiple sclerosis. Part 1 explored common and uncommon etiologies, including genetics, smoking, latitude, vitamin D, viruses, hormones, solvents, heavy metals, stress, celiac disease, and air pollution. Treatments related to these etiologies include smoking cessation, stress management, vitamin D supplementation, dietary changes, hormone therapy, detoxification, and chelation. Resveratrol Impacts Adipocyte Hormone Secretion

An interesting new study published in September 2012 reports that resveratrol moderates hormone secretion from fat cells. Resveratrol is a potent antioxidant found in high concentrations in the skin of red and purple grapes.

Researchers evaluated the impact on white adipose tissue by resveratrol, due to its ability to mimic the beneficial effects of calorie restriction. White adipose tissue is used to store energy in the body. It also acts as a thermal insulator and works to regulate body temperature. (more…)

The cardiovascular “super-nutrient” resveratrol, which is prominently found in grape skins and red wine, may also play an important role in mitigating prostate cancer.
