The Vagus nerve: Your friend in weight loss and a better mood

It’s no secret that a healthy nervous system is important for well-being and longevity. The spinal nerves are responsible for controlling most of the muscles in your torso, arms, and legs, along with bowel, bladder, and reproductive functions. The cranial nerves reside mostly in the head region and control much of what goes on in the face and neck, but the tenth cranial nerve goes way beyond. The Vagus nerve influences your body and brain more than most people realize. (more…)

5 Amazing Properties of Sunlight You’ve Never Heard About

5 Amazing Properties of Sunlight You've Never Heard About

Sunlight is well-known to provide us vitamin D, but did you know that it kills pain, keeps us alert at night, burns fat and more…

Our biological connection and dependence to the sun is so profound, that the very variation in human skin color from African, melanin-saturated dark skin, to the relatively melanin de-pigmented, Caucasian lighter-skin, is a byproduct of the offspring of our last common ancestor from Africa (as determined by mitochondrial DNA) migrating towards sunlight-impoverished higher latitudes, which began approximately 60,000 years ago. In order to compensate for the lower availability of sunlight, the body rapidly adjusted, essentially requiring the removal of the natural “sunscreen” melanin from the skin, which interferes with vitamin D production; vitamin D, of course, is involved in the regulation of over 2,000 genes, and therefore is more like a hormone, without which our entire genetic infrastructure becomes destabilized. Obese Rats and Melatonin

After analyzing the effects melatonin had on obese, diabetic rats, the researchers found that melatonin was able to help prevent “heart diseases associated to obesity and dyslipidemia”. Up For Debate: The HCG Diet—Fantastic or Fad?

There’s no denying that, as a nation, we are just plain fat. Among adults age 20 and older, nearly 150 million are overweight, with 75 million of those people classified as obese.1

With these kind of staggering statistics, it’s no wonder so many Americans look for dieting options that allow them to lose weight fast without feeling deprived or starved. But a diet like that couldn’t possibly exist, could it? Well, perhaps it does.

A program known as the HCG diet has been around since the 1950s, but has recently experienced a resurgence in popularity. So what is the HCG diet all about, and how does it work? Let’s first get into the basics.

Resveratrol Impacts Adipocyte Hormone Secretion

An interesting new study published in September 2012 reports that resveratrol moderates hormone secretion from fat cells. Resveratrol is a potent antioxidant found in high concentrations in the skin of red and purple grapes.

Researchers evaluated the impact on white adipose tissue by resveratrol, due to its ability to mimic the beneficial effects of calorie restriction. White adipose tissue is used to store energy in the body. It also acts as a thermal insulator and works to regulate body temperature. (more…)

Diet Type Affects Energy Expenditure

In a JAMA Preliminary Communication, Cara B. Ebbeling, PhD, and colleagues “challenge the notion that a calorie is a calorie from a metabolic perspective.” They found that dietary composition affects energy expenditure and a person’s ability to maintain weight loss. Twenty-one study participants, 18 to 40 years old, engaged in 4 weeks of weight monitoring, 12 weeks of a weight-loss diet, and 4 weeks of weight stabilization. No changes were made in physical activity, just caloric intake. All of the participants had a body mass index of 27 kg or higher at baseline and lost 10% to 15% of their weight before commencing the 4-week weight stabilization period. (more…)

Theanine – A Nutrient for Relaxation

Theanine is the active component of green tea responsible not only for its taste but also for its relaxing effects.  In 1999 a method for concentrating a purified form into a dietary supplement was perfected (Suntheanine1).  Brain cells are known to generate electrical pulses, called brain waves, from their cell surfaces.  It was demonstrated in humans that 40 minutes after taking theanine (50 mg to 200 mg) relaxing alpha waves were generated in various brain regions, an effect that may last up to 12 hours.
